How to Battle the Munchies

One of the things that not enough people talk about when it comes to smoking weed is the munchies. Well, let me rephrase that a little. People will tell you about the munchies, but no one tells you just how serious it can be. When you’ve just finished smoking your second joint, laying on the couch, and trying to remember what planet you’re on, there is only one thing that comes to your mind - snacks. Seriously, unless you have experienced the munchies yourself, there is no way to describe what it is like to eat food while smoking weed. Pretty much anything that would normally taste good while you’re sober is going to taste incredible while you’re high.

Before I have a smoke session with my friends at our place, we always head to the grocery store beforehand to pick out some snacks. I tend to get something salty and something sweet. I limit myself to just one item from each category, because I know I do not need to eat more than that but definitely will if I have the snacks on hand. After you’ve smoked enough weed and you are nice and high, there is truly nothing better than kicking back on the couch and eating all of the snacks you have at hand. Eating is different when you are high.

You know when you first open a chip bag and eat one or two? Those are always the best tasting ones right? And the more you eat, the less tasty until you finally are done eating them. Well, think of the munchies like everything you eat tastes exactly like the first time you ate it. The flavors are always an explosion in your mouth, and you just can’t wait for the next bite. This is how one ends up going through an entire family size bag of doritos in the matter of hours. So, there's no doubt that the munchies are a real and serious problem. For people who are on a strict diet but need to use medical marijuana for their chronic health conditions, the munchies are a real barrier for them while they try to lose weight.

So what are some of the ways to battle the munchies after you have smoked a decent amount of weed? Well the first step is to be careful about which cannabis strain you decide to use. There are over 700 strains available in the United States marijuana industry, and each one is unique in its own way. Some strains are more likely to cause the munchies, while others may even be able to soothe your appetite after smoking it.

Either way, it is important to stay away from those heavily munchie inducing strains if at all possible. Another tip that I can give when it comes to battling the munchies is to not junk food on hand when you start smoking weed. If there are doritos in the pantry and I am high, I will eat them. That is basically Newton’s fourth law as far as I’m concerned.

Having healthier snacks on hand that are already made up and ready to go may be a great way to still enjoy eating after your smoke session, but you at least won’t be eating 900 calories worth of salt and fat like me. Plus, while most people who use cannabis never report having a hangover the next day, eating your bodyweight in gummy worms the day before is still going to leave you feeling pretty low when you wake up in the morning. So keep that in mind the next time you are battling the munchies!
